History of Vinnytsia in Old Photos

Task 1. Read the texts and match them with the photos

What is the oldest photo of Vinnytsia? This question interested both historians and journalists, who found ancient photographs of the city. The photos turned out to be much older than they had expected.

1)

A photo dated 1870 came to the Vinnytsia Museum of Local History from the Polish website. It is considered to be the most ancient of the known photographs of the city above the Bug. The picture was taken just a few years after the abolition of serfdom in the Russian Empire. Unfortunately, the author of the picture is unknown. In the photo we see the walls of the Jesuit monastery. The photo was taken from the Kempa Island. These walls have remained there to this day.

2)

A photo of the Caputsin Brothers’ Church was taken at about the same time: between 1870 and 1880. This Catholic church was built when the city was controlled by the Poles.

3)

One of Vinnytsia's oldest existing photographs is a photo of the Old Town landscape from Kozytsky Street. It was made by Stanislav Nakelsky in 1890. In the photo in the distance you can see St. Nicholas Church, which still stands today. Closer to the center of the photo there is the Castle Hill (now the Old Town Bridge).

4)

There is no information about Stanislav Nakelsky who took the photo. However, there is another photograph of Vinnitsa, taken by him at the beginning of XX century. It shows Pivdennyi Buh and the island of Kempa.
